Emma Raducanu from Romania became the first woman to win the 2016 World Cup with her team, defeating South Africa in a nail-biting final. She is now leading an all-male world cup winning streak of 5 years and 2 months.
The “sports personality of the year 2021 nominees” is a list of athletes and sports stars that are nominated for Sports Personality of the Year 2021. The winner will be crowned on December 31, 2020.
Emma Raducanu, a teen US Open winner, has been named Sports Personality of the Year 2021.
Raducanu’s astonishing triumph at Flushing Meadows ended Britain’s 44-year wait for a women’s Grand Slam singles champion.
Her Cinderella victory came after a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon in July, her first Grand Slam main draw appearance.
Diver Tom Daley came in second and swimmer Adam Peaty came in third in a popular poll.
The major prize was also considered for Manchester City and England player Raheem Sterling, boxer Tyson Fury, and Great Britain’s most successful paralympian Sarah Storey.
“It’s an incredible honor to be among these candidates. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments, “Raducanu explained.
Emma Raducanu, the US Open winner, has been named Sports Personality of the Year for 2021.
“I’m overjoyed; I grew up watching Sports Personality of the Year, and it’s an honor to be among the previous winners.”
“I’m also pleased for British tennis, and that we’ve won this award…again!”
“This year has been incredible thanks to all of the fans and votes. This year’s excitement at Wimbledon in front of my home audience was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.”
Raducanu, who is now 19 and rated number one in the United Kingdom, is the first female tennis player to be named Sports Personality of the Year since Virginia Wade in 1977, when she was the last British woman to win a Grand Slam singles championship.
Andy Murray, who won the award for the third time in 2016, was the most recent tennis player to do so. Since Zara Phillips, now Tindall, won the prize in 2006, Raducanu is the first girl to win it.
A memorable year
Raducanu burst into the spotlight after finishing her A-Levels at Wimbledon, when she was given a wildcard into the main draw late in the tournament after making her WTA Tour debut earlier in June.
As she advanced to the fourth round, she defeated formidable opponents and made appearances on exhibition courts, becoming the youngest British woman to reach the Wimbledon last 16 in the Open era.
Her fairytale run came to an end in devastating way when she was forced to quit from her fourth-round match due to lung problems – but no one knew what was ahead.
